A Sad but Softly Hopeful Story

“She didn’t say they couldn’t be friends.”

Who has been keeping this beautiful and heartbreaking book from me?

This book follows the story of Will and Rosie and everyone that becomes intertwined as their relationship twists, turns, breaks and comes back together.

My overall and stand out thought from this story is that I just wanted the best for so many of the characters. The story and characterisation so perfectly highlights the complexities of human nature and the struggle of the relationship within yourself and others. It can be so easy at times to feel frustrated at the choices of characters and sad at the outcomes of their decisions, but it is all used to show the struggles of the main characters and what obligations and wants they believe they deserve. Will and Rosie perfectly showed the complexities of these issues and I must say, with each development for Will I just wanted happiness for him.

I appreciate the depiction of different mental health journeys and how it each character chooses a path of dealing with, supporting and, at times, struggling to live with the effects that their mental health and illness causes them. I like that the story deals with this as a long-term challenge rather than a “quick fix”. Many moments were able to convey the frustration, tiredness and awareness of the need to approach their issues in a healthier way that felt quite human.

Overall, a story filled with grief and love that touches upon many serious topics. A perfect read for someone who is looking for a contemporary romantic read that shows the complications of what it means and how to obtain a happy ending.

Book Synopsis

Will and Rosie meet as teenagers.

They’re opposites in every way. She overthinks everything; he is her twin brother’s wild and unpredictable friend. But over secret walks home and late-night phone calls, they become closer—destined to be one another’s great love story.

Until, one day, tragedy strikes, and their future together is shattered.

But as the years roll on, Will and Rosie can’t help but find their way back to each other. Time and again, they come close to rekindling what might have been.

What do you do when the one person you should forget is the one you just can’t let go?
